Living costs

New Zealand is an affordable study destination, with options to suit every budget. To obtain a student visa, students must demonstrate they can cover their living costs, which vary depending on location, lifestyle, and part-time work opportunities. Most student visas allow those aged 18 and over to work up to 20 hours per week during term time, and up to 40 hours per week during scheduled breaks.

The fees below are estimated weekly costs for students staying in homestay accommodation. All fees are listed in New Zealand dollars (NZD).

  • Accommodation: $440
  • Mobile phone plan: $15
  • Public Transport: $0 – $50
  • Free time activities: 50 – $150
  • Electricity, water, gas and internet: Included in the homestay fee
  • Food: Included in the full-board homestay fee

Costs can vary depending on lifestyle, accommodation, and hobbies and interests. However, for a reasonable standard of living, we think students need about $20,000- $27,000 a year.
