“UPIC gave us the academic foundation we needed and connected us with friends from around the world including Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Japan.
When we started at AUT, we weren’t alone, and that made the transition much easier.”
Kia Ora! Could you introduce yourselves?
Hi, I’m Vivin, and I’m studying Communication Studies at AUT. I attended UP International College before starting university, which really set me up for success here.
How did studying at UP International College help with university life?
It gave me the academic foundation I needed, but also introduced me to people from all over the world. I made friends from countries like Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Japan, which really enriched my experience. When I started at AUT, I wasn’t alone — and that made the transition much easier.
Did you face any challenges as an international student?
I was anxious about making friends when I first arrived, but luckily, I had already made a lot of friends at UP International College.
Did teachers at UPIC support you well?
Yes, the teachers were very supportive. We could reach out to them in class or via email, and they were always patient, explaining things until we fully understood. Every two weeks, we also had meetings with our home teachers to discuss our progress.
How does studying at AUT compare to your education experience in Indonesia?
I prefer the practical approach of university here, and it’s been a better fit for me compared to high school back home. It’s been a challenge to adapt to living on my own, but I’ve become more self-reliant and confident in my abilities to manage my studies and personal life.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I go to the AUT recreation centre three to four times a week to meet new people. I enjoy staying active and playing badminton, and I’ve made a lot of friends through sports. It’s one of my favorite ways to relax after a busy week of classes.
What are your future plans?
I’m really enjoying my communication major, especially because it aligns with my goal of working in a public relations company. I also plan to get permanent residence here because I love everything about New Zealand.
What advice do you have for new students?
It’s definitely going to be tough at times, but I promise it will be worth it. Just stay positive, keep pushing through, and don’t forget to have fun. University is not just about studying—it’s about growing as a person and enjoying the experience.
